Hey guys my friends '04 Jetta 1.8t waterpump just took a **** on him. I am a reasonably mechanically inclined and was planning to attempt installing the waterpump and new thermostat for him. I have already ordered and recieved the new metal waterpump and thermo. I just had a couple questions about the install before I dive into it. First off in order to replace the waterpump do you have to completely remove the timing belt? If not I know it has to at least be loosened in order to get the waterpump out. Long story short in order to change the waterpump am I going to have to reset the timing on the motor or will I be able to install it without effecting the timing at all? Any help with this subject would be greatly appreciated and by the way I own a built SR20DET S14 that has been all built by me so I do know what I am doing. Thanx, Cameron

You will want to plan on compressing the tensioner to get the belt back on. You don't have to remove the belt from the cam/crank pulley's, but it's not going on the WP without compressing it.
