After replacing a worn-out front to back cable catcher I am having issues aligning my 1st gear. After following the procedure in the dieselgeek.com install guide.
I am still unable to get the car in fist gear. I have tried a number of different ways to get it aligned but there is still no 1st gear. The strange thing is that the weight on the shifter #2 is hitting location #3 when I try to put it in 1st
after aligning it according the DG install guide.

I am worried that something else might have busted when the rubber on the cable cacher wore out.

Any idea?
Could it be a shift fork?

the diesel geek instructions are good, but don't be afraid to adjust it without the pin installed to lock the shifter.

Does it go into second without a problem?

If it goes into second, but not first then you only have to adjust the cable that rotates the selector.

IF it cant pull into first gear chances are that you have the cable too long.
Without using the diesel geek nail to hold the shifter just shorten the #1 cable a bit and see if it goes into first.

If it wont go into second either, then you need to adjust the upper cable as well.

Thanks enginerd. we spent all last friday night playing with this and if we got 1st, we lost reverse or 2nd (IIRC). Pete, when do you want to try again?

enginerd thanks for the replay. Last night I tried to align it by not using the nail and I tested it gear by gear. Now it looks more like I do not have 1st and 2nd. I think it might be the shift fork but I am not sure. Is there a good way to check this without pulling the transmission?

Shifter Video 1 <-- At the beginning of this video you can see how the gear selector goes too far and hits the support.
Shifter Video 2

Sorry about the video quality.

If you are having trouble with first and second, try adjusting the other cable slightly.

try one notch longer and then if that feels worse try one notch shorter and see how that feels.
You have to have the selector positioned properly in the up down position to get it to catch for 1/2.

you could be traveling too much and missing the correct position. Maybe overshooting into where it wants to catch reverse.

Honestly i would spend a long time dicking with it before dropping the tranny and opening it up.

remove the cable #3 to give you full range of motion up and down and then in the engine bay by hand pull the assembly up towards the top and rotate it for 5th/6th to get a feel for it (might not be all the way up for 5/6 but pretty far up), then push it down a bit more and rotate it to get 3/4 to engage, then go down a bit more to get 1/2 to engage. You get a good feel for it without the shifter cables

Looks like a half assed rivet broke off.
