Blah blah freaking blah

« on: April 21, 2007, 02:52:01 AM »

OK, here's the deal.  I put H & R coilovers on my 98 Passat about 2 years ago.  Now I have this lovely bounce effect when I hit hills (vs. holes which is just a big thump) the ass end of the car jimmys jacks and sways all over the bloody place.  I have a rear sway bar, I have a few ideas going through my head and I have no idea which may be valid.  (Please forgive my "technical terms"  LOL)

1.  the "shocks"
2.  the dampers
3.  the bearings (which we just replaced not too long ago)

I loved how tight it was when I put these babies on, now I'm just sad.  If I go too fast and hit a bump I practically squirrel into other lanes.  Crying or Very sad

Are they adjustable?  It sounds like you are having dampening problems.  The shock can't control the springs.  If they are adjustable, maybe you just need to tweak the adjustment.

I don't know how adjustable the rear is.  I will hopefully be able to get some time to climb under her before too long here.  I know that the front is and I'm pretty sure the rear is, just not as much.
Thanks for the idea.

were it the front, i would say you've got worn ball joints.  on the back, the only guesses that i could take are that your wheels aren't tight onto the stub axle.  meaning that either the lugbolts could be loose or the the nut that holds the wheel bearing onto the axle is not tight.  your car would wander all over the place in either of those cases.  of course you could have really, really shot dampers.  that's easy to check.  bounce the back of the car up and down a little and see if it stops bouncing almost immediately.  if it does, it's not your dampers.  oh, yeah, the bushings on the pivots for the rear axle beam/torsion bar could be toast.  that would do it too.  good luck

If they are adjustable, try turning up the rebound damping.

I don't know about H&R's but my konis the rears have to be removed to adjust damping.

Damn..2 years and they're bouncing already? I have a set on a mk 2 (hr coilovers). They have ~ 5 years on them and one of the rear shocks is leaking. I've pretty happy with them (3-4 roadrace events per year plus daily). You say two years, but how many miles?

Lemme guess, you have the O-bar/P&P Motorsports swaybar?

By adding that swaybar, you stiffen the rear to the point where you basically convert your car into a live axle, and well...that's how live axles drive.
