HA HA you though this was going to be a drag racing movie didn't you   icon_face

Was an awesome weekend for the GTI. Got some revenge on the 4wd guys. The course was perfect. I just hit the rev limiter at the end of each straight. Gearing was perfect, and i was spooled up on corner exit. Was a blast. My damn co driver beat me by 0.088 seconds though  icon_squintfinger  not going to live that one down.  I did have a 54.30 but they called me for a cone the bastards.

Good stuff Justin.   How far have you gone with the front suspension?  Camber plates/control arms/spindles?

Auto-x Just isn't for 3400+ lb porkers  cheesy   j/k

Front suspension is pretty wild now.

Camber plates, H2 Sport Spindles, H2 sport custom control arms 1/2" longer than stock (1" wider track than stock), spherical joints instead of urethane bushings, Koni coilovers with custom valving (porsche 944 Cup race valving 500 - 700lb spring rate capacity). 1" Shorter strut bodies cut and welded by koni. 500Lb front springs, ~300 lb rear springs. It's only ~1" lower than stock I get plenty of comments from the low riders on how high it is. Im running ~2.25° of negative camber in the front and have the stock 1.5 Degrees negative in the rear. A little toe out in the front makes it turn in really well, but the lask of adjustment in teh rear makes for squirly late braking.

One of the main things is the tires. With the wider track I did some fender rolling, but I managed to get 245/45/17  Kumho V710's on there. These are damn sticky race tires. Im sure I woudl be a second to 1.5 slower on any normal kind of street tire. Tire pressures are 32 lbs front 27 lbs rear Cold. I saw 39 psi hot after 2 runs. Just for reference the next fastest VW was 59.xx seconds.

I appologize for the off-topic but wouldn't you be concerned with the premature wear in having the spherical bushing collect dust, sand and debris?...

yeah I though about it, but I was putting so much load into the car with the race tires and the camber that I was getting 225s to rub on the inner chassis. That's just how much motion I had with upgraded urethane bushings.

With the spherical joints there is no movement at all and the 245's dont rub the chassis under load. Its well worth the compromise in potential longevity. I dont drive in the winter and put less than 6K miles a year on the car anyways.  Steering feel and turn in is insane so I can deal.

Mad props for going your own way Justin.  My suspension revamp will begin this winter with the spindles and control arms as well as some custom spring rates.   Cool

Tom at H2 sport has been very helpful with getting the car where it is. For Spindles and control arms definitely give them a call. The control arms that I have are special order, I am not sure they have any in stock so be prepared for a delay on those. The spindles are in stock and shipping.

If you do a 6 speed swap, Tom has some hub adapters that convert 5 spd hubs to 6 spd hubs to accomodate the big allen bolt vs the nut design.

Thanks,

yeah I am still running front sway bar. I tried no fsb with 500 lb springs and it still had too much roll in the transitions for auto-x. some ppl swear its the best thing for road racing, but imo its better to have a sway and stiff springs.
