just so you knwo a lightweight single mass flywheel makes alot of noise in an 02m tranny. im not talking a little noise like all lightweight wheels do, im talking a constant rocks in a box rattle at idle.

I went with an 8 lb unorthodox racing flywheel, with a 4 paddle spring hub clutch disc and a sachs (R32 I believe) pressure plate.

Pedal is light, engagement is smooth  compared to my last spec 6 paddle  - never has slipped. Not sure what retail is on the kit.

I got it local from these guys, they dont seem to have it listed on the site, though they have good prices on the 5 spd stuff.

Does this happen with other makes that use a dual mass from the factory? Or is it just VW's? I know what makes the noise, just don't know exactly why. Any ideas enginerd?

The noise on the 6 speeds is worse than 5 spds because there are 3 gear stacks in there, and additional gear clearance to accommodate the tolerance stackup. Some are worse than others because you can get a transmission where the gears are closer together and make less noise.

Removing a dual mass flywheel and putting on a single mass light weight wheel will almost always make noise in the transmission. The firing pulses from the engine cause the flywheel to speed up and slow down quickly and this causes the gears to get loaded and unloaded and loaded. This causes the chatter. Under heavier loads the teeth never unload, but light loads you get the noise. The manufacturer can have better tolerances to reduce this, and pulsation varies by bore/stroke design of an engine, gear oil thickness, engine mount stiffness has a big impact, etc etc but most will have this increased noise.

THX FOR THE INFO

I like it when I know why something is doing what it’s doing

What gear oil do you recommend for the O2M (especially single mass flywheel)

I have got a set (3) of vf engineering  mounts ,will this make it worse or better
