Im owner of a Golf MKIV 1.8T AGU , last dyno was 390WHP with 3071R and unitronic software. Im trying to go for more whp and buyed the following from arnold at pagparts :
Gt3076R-15 .64
Cat Cams 268-260
Cat springs for 8200rpms

Problem is the following :
Made installation with a mayor mechanic from A VW facility and on 10 mins on idle after finishing installing all the things, Intake Cam advanced itself alone 6 spaces and 4 intake valves were bent. Exhaust valves , exhaust cam and pistons didnt take damage. We took the head off last week , rechecked everything , checked cams alone without the hydraulic lifters to check that cam moved perfect. There was a minor scratch on one of the seats where the valve sits so we think it was that the cam blocked from moving when it took some heat. We Changed Chain tensioner , gaskets , bolts , and the 4 valves. Reinstalled everything checking everything moved fine. Today we started it and we went for a try , car was fast as hell. Everything looked fine all the day till one hour ago. When starting the car (car was shutdown and didnt start again) a rasping sound ocurred and AGAIN THE INTAKE CAM ADVANCED ITSELF ALONE 10 SPACES FROM THE CHAIN. 12 VALVES WERE BENT, NOTHING HAPPENED TO THE EXHAUST CAM NEITHER PISTONS OR EXHAUST VALVES. JUST THE INTAKE CAM AGAIN ADVANCED ALONE 10 CHAIN SPACES. Before car failed i could race it all day long , i got till 7600rpms without any problem. Boosted like 29 psi without any problem.

WHAT IS WRONG HERE ??? I TRUST MY MECHANIC , HE HAS INSTALLED MORE THAN 100´S OF CAMS AND NEVER IN HIS LIFE HAS HAPPENED SOMETHING TO HIM LIKE THIS. HE INSTALLED ME MY PAUTERS , PELOQUIN , ETC AND EVERYTHING ALWAYS HAS BEEN FINE WITH HIM
He thinks maybe the springs are too damn hard so chain cam tensioner has to do too much extra strength to move them , thats why the intake cam has blocked twice. Other option is that the cat cams tollerance are bad , and when they get hot they block and chain skips some tooths happening this disaster. Arnold told me i dont need anything else for this setup. Is that true?? Dont i need a special cam tensioner for the extra strength of the springs ??
All the torques were done as they appear on the bentley.

I am really thinking there is a problem on the intake cams or the springs are too strong for the chain and chain tensioner to move when they get too much temperature. Im most certain and 100% sure there has not been any mistake on the installation. The cams are 268-260 Cat Cams.

Ill need all the help i can get or ill be returning to stock cams and springs. I wont accept a 3rd failure.

thanks.

PD: Car was incredible fast when i tried , maybe 450whp or more with pump gas and WI at 29psi.

I agree with bob & what he posted over on vortex... I really, really can't see that chain being able to jump a tooth. I would take a good look at the cam gear and look for signs of it rotating...

if it jumped a tooth there would be metal everywhere.

yeah id say the cam is rotating in the gear too.

The really is no way for the cam chain to skip over the teeth that I can see. What I think is far more likely is the gear on the end of the cam is incorrectly pressed on and is rotating on the cam.
Do you have the cast iron cams or the steel billets with adjustable cam gears?

The springs are not too strong- do check to see if the bottom of the retainer is hitting the seal/guide- although this would be very unlikely.

The gears I have seen are .002~.003" inteference fit with the cam, takes around 3 tons to press them off cold. Maybe the Cat cams are a little undersize, or the gears are over.
