Hi Guys

Euro spec makes an Engine Girdle for the 1.8t

Good or bad, above what hp does one need to consider and what other company makes them

Last question, they say it acts as a oil scraper what do you think

Bertil's Racing Engines make them also.  I'm not sure at what HP level they become necessary.  I looked at the main bearings on my 700hp engine (no girdle) and they looked like new.  It is not a bolt on proposition, you have to machine the spacers to fit.  You also have to have the main bores checked since you are using new fasteners.

Thx

If the 1.8t master thinks it’s not good then I will abort with the girdle

So one get a lot of things for the 1.8t motors that do not count any points

Well then welcome to Elitedubs!!!

What country are you in?

This car is on of the higher HP 1.8T's. I don't have the spec's

Bob built a project engine that made over 700hp with a GT35/40 turbo. If you are planning a high HP build, you came to the right place to ask questions!

I don't know about girdles but I just blew up my 1.8T that had stock internals. The car was making a dyno'd 300hp reliably for about 5000km. One thing that is amazing is that the car still turns over and the broken rod end still spins freely on the crank. I can literally put my hand into the engine and spin the end. Normally with so much damage I would have expected the crank to be siezed. It looks like the only real weak link may is rods. My computer is telling me that max boost was 288kpa(41psi) and the rods may not have liked that.

That’s bad , sorry for the loss ,,what turbo did you use with 41 psi that only makes 300hp ,, Question Question Question

It's a T3/04.I havn't owned the car long. I never reset the engine minimum & maximum logs. It has logged about 88 hours of which I have probably only had the car for two or three. I don't believe the 40 psi was achieved by me. The highest boost I saw the day it went boom was about 23psi. I was running on the default setpoint, only ten psi when the rod failed. This failure was probably caused by running high horsepower for 5000km on stock rods for too long. http://s108.photobucket.com/albums/n32/TommyBoyee/

Looks like it, but it's a longitudinal pan.

My computer is telling me that max boost was 288kpa(41psi) and the rods may not have liked that.

The SEM records MAP sensor reading. it needs to be converted from absolute to actual.
288kpa absolute. you need to subtract 100kpa to get actual.

188kpa = 27.3psi actual

Ah, so, I learn something new every day. Thanks. Well I'm sure you'd agree that 27psi on stock rods is probably not a good idea either.
The EBC was set to alarm at 23psi so I still don't think I got up that high on my run. I think the rod may have developed a fracture and literally split in half on the downstroke. When the crank came around it sheared the middle of the rod  and spat it out the back of the engine. There was enough damage that I drained a mixture of coolant and oil out of the drain plug.

Good news is that I found a suitable block(AEB) today for $150cdn. It isn't pretty now but I'm going to build this one myself over the winter.

Maybe I'll do an engine thread here instead of hijacking someone elses.

Cheers
