Hey Guys,
Anybody have any tips or tricks for replacing wheel bearings?  Have parts, shop said we need a tool to do them ($200 deposit + $20 for the 24 hour rental) or bring it back in with the hub(?) and have them press it together for $30.  I'm working on the Passat on this one.  I have yet to break out the Bentley and look it up.  Just looking for experience and the expanded knowledge of the greater good!

Add to the mix an '04 Getta GLI and you have Sarah's 1.8 turbo stable.

i haven't done a vw wheel bearing, but i'm sure you will need to press the old bearing out and press the new one in. might just want to bring them the hub, if you can get it off the control arms.

I don't know with time constraints and having to do this on the weekend if we will be able to take it in to the shop or not.  I'm thinking the tool might be the way we need to go.  Do you know if you can do it without taking it off of the control arms?  If we have to take it off, it might be worth using a vacation day and borrowing a car to get to the shop.

Ok, that sucked!  2.5 weeks w/o my car while we figured out how to take it apart to get the hub into the shop (the tool was meant for a car w/o ABS brakes or you damage the sensor).  So, got the hub off got it into the shop, put it back in and then... hmmm what's that nasty grinding sound???  OH CRAP one off the back set of wheel bearings is shot.  Ok, take it to Sears, slowly, cause they say they can do it and align it for me.  "Um, Ma'am, you know your low rider that you just brought in to us?  Well, it's too low, we can't align it."  "Huh, well isn't that funny, you guys aligned it after we put the coil overs on it."  So either the F-ers didn't align it the first time  icon_liar and said they did or they did but the tech on that day was a freakin idiot argh!  They call me back "um Ma'am, the parts you have are wrong (true), we need a whole bearing assembly"  "Ok, nevermind, I'm coming to get my car"  Schmucks sold me the wrong part (only freakin place open on Sunday).  Took it to my trusty VW mechanic  icon_notworthy and they put the right part in and FINALLY got my car back.  Still haven't aligned it.  Anywho, that's my rant, Sears sucks, Schucks sucks!  I guess those were things I already knew and I should know never to leave something until Sunday! rant2
