OK, so I've been running low boost (comparitivly) 15.5lbs. Last week it overheated. Temp gauge pegged. Lots of steam from around overflow tank but cooled down and was OK at idle. Start to drive, temp gauge goes up. Now, OK at idle, coolant a little low in resivor, thermostat seems to open but got no heat in car. I know the answer to this (head gasket) but still would like to hear some suggestions. I want to pressure test the system, does anyone know it the adapter to fit pressure tester on coolant tank is VW specific? Thanks.

99.9999% chance yoru waterpump has died. they are cheap plastic POS impellers that crack and spin on teh shaft. They work at idle, but when the revs go up the torque goes up and the impeller spins.

I like the sound of that more than a head gasket, so then I should see signs of leakage at the pump?

When my pump died you could not see anything. The impeller came off the shaft so you did not see anything outside the pump. The only thing that told me something was wrong was the temperature rising.

If you have a friendly dealer, you can still get that under warranty if you're not over milage.

i have yet to see one leak coolant, like already said the oem pumps have the plastic impeller and thats the big problem.once you go aftermarket those pumps should have a metal impeller and will last alot longer. if you wanted a quick check before you dig into the timing belt area, pull the thermostat housing off and reach inside and see if you can turn the impeller by hand,if its still in one piece that is.

Thanks, that's a good idea, to do this weekend! Is there an aftermarket pump available that is a little stronger? I've never seen one.

when i did mine,i got it from ECS and it had the metal impeller.i want to say that the majority of the pumps that are being sold now are the metal ones but i couldd be wrong.best thing to do is call the comapny and ask before you place the order.

Yea, I see it. Actually less money than OEM too!

Everyone know's how to check the water pump? When the car is running, look at your resovior. If you see hot coolent dribbling back in through the top hose then your pump is probably fine.

Problem is that it works at idle. The impeller gets cracked but stays on teh shaft. When the RPM's go up the impeller slips on the shaft. This is so common.
I have never seen a 1.8T with a bad thermostat, head gasket, or radiator. They all overheat from the water pump. Prob VW's way of making us change the timing belt earlier than the rediculous 105K maint period.
