The 1-2 shift color got jambed up due to some missed shifts.  I removed my short throw shifter and haven't missed a shift since.  That is the part that everyone breaks. It is much believed that this tranny is weak, but this problem is due to the driver.  Other than that, my tranny is all original with 110k miles of sever abuse and now holds up to 11 second quarter mile passes

Ouch.  The slider only costs $600 and the synchros cost about $650 for all 6.  Plus a couple seals and gaskets that cost about $30.  I was into the tranny repair for only $1300.  They must have charged you $1700 in labor.

Basically if you don't miss a shift you will be fine.  Short throws IMO make it easier to miss a shift due to the sloppy linkage on these cars.  Other than that you can beat the crap out of them.  I have already snapped an axle going after 11 second passes and the tranny was all good.
